"What's available locally?"
In the Hoyland and Barnsley area there are lots of opportunities for people of all ages to learn something new or gain a qualification. You can study full or part time with everything from University degrees courses to simply brushing up on skills like Maths, English or IT.
Work related courses, diplomas and apprenticeships are also available through colleges or local training providers. With options for both adults and young people as well as family learning for the whole family. In fact there's something for everyone, to suit all interest and abilities.
"Why should I take a course?"
Whatever stage you’re at in life, learning new skills can improve your career and life prospects. Getting the right qualifications and training helps you to overcome any potential barriers to you getting on. What's more research has shown that there will be far fewer jobs for un-skilled workers in the future. Which means that skills are likely to become more and more important and a valuable personal asset. You can find out about qualifications and where they fit into the national framework of qualifications on our qualifications page 2 (see link at top of page).
"Can I get help with my choices?"
We know it's not always easy to choose the right option or course so we suggest that you talk to the people around you first. Your relatives and friends can be a great source of advice and support. Whilst a work club advisor or one of IGA advisors can provide professional advice. Young people should also talk with parents, relatives, friends as well as people like a teacher, youth worker or a support worker. For information on funding support that may be available please visit our funding support page 3 (link at top of this page).
